The Chevrolet Motor Car Company was founded in 1911. William C. Durant, who previously worked for General Motors, joined forces with racecar driver Louis Chevrolet. The first Chevy to be produced was called the Classic Six. It was designed as a five-passenger touring sedan that could supposedly reach 65 miles per hour, very impressive in that day. It also came standard with lights and a folding top. The next vehicle was the 490, and it achieved overwhelming success. This was rolled out in 1915. Banking on the automaker s success, Durant purchased enough shares in GM to regain control. Thus, Chevrolet became a division of GM, and by the 1920s was the company s largest division.
In 1927, for the first time, Chevy outsold Ford. Chevrolet was the first to include independent front suspension, on their cars, giving riders a much smoother experience. In the 1950 s, Chevy introduced the technologies of power brakes, seats and windows, adding a taste of luxury to an affordable car. This decade also saw the first Corvette. The next achievement for Chevy was to offer the first domestic production car with all-round independent suspension, and it was named the Corvair. Two other hit makers in this era were the compact Nova and the Camaro, Chevrolet s competition to the Ford Mustang. The Camaro made great strides and was a big sales item for the company.
Chevrolet offers a wide variety of vehicles, and for the used car shopper, there are plenty of preowned models on the market. From subcompact hatchbacks, vans, SUVs, and trucks, there is never a lack of Chevy s on the road. Most used car buyers want something that is reliable and reasonably priced, and Chevrolet has this to offer. Chevrolet stands in as a manufacturer with a storied history. To stay with current trends and recover from some down years, the company has even gone into the hybrid and fuel efficient markets. The Silverado is one of Chevy s most prized possessions. Older versions of the Silverado 1500 pickup have been praised for their strong work ethic. The latest used version, however, exhibits greatly improved fit and finish. Where there was once an abundance of lackluster design, hard plastic and uneven panel gaps there are now richly grained upholstery, softer materials and precise fitments.
The competent and quiet Chevrolet Cobalt is an example of America's ability to build a decent compact automobile as well. The Cobalt debuted for the 2005 model year as a replacement for the long-running Chevy Cavalier, which was both smaller and of much poorer quality. The base and mid-trim Cobalt models have mostly stood pat through the years. The most significant changes for non-SS Cobalts have been the addition of side curtain airbags for 2008 (prior to that they were optional) and a boost in power (up from 145 to 155 hp) for the 2.2-liter inline-4 in 2009.
