The Edge is the second attempt from Ford to offer a successful crossover utility vehicle in a very crowded market. While the Explorer, Expedition, and Excursion are long standing favorite for those looking for heavy duty and full sized SUVs, ford had trouble when it rolled out its first crossover, the Freestyle. The Edge, on the other hand, is cool, stylish, and very impressive for any consumer in the used crossover market. The preowned Ford Edge is based on a lengthened and widened version of the Mazda 6 sedan platform and shares many of its mechanicals with the Mazda CX-9, including a strong V6 engine. The Edge, however, can only hold five occupants, and does not opt for a third row seat. Ford's performance and features closely match competing midsize crossover SUVs, and the Ford Edge is most certainly worth a look for family-oriented used SUV buyers interested in a comfortable, all-around competent package.
The 2007 Ford Edge was the models first year, it gave the public a new crossover that has the tough look of a sport utility vehicle but is built on a car-based platform to aid driving performance. In looks, the Edge looks like a bulky wagon in profile and up front wears Ford's new corporate grille, first seen in production guise on the Fusion midsize sedan. For power, the used Edge offers a larger V-6 engine than Ford models traditionally use. For years, Ford's primary V-6 has been a 3.0-liter mill that is now being outpaced in the industry's horsepower war. The Edge's new 3.5-liter V-6 should help Ford even the fight. Both SE and uplevel SEL trim levels are available.
For the convenience that most SUV buyers are looking for, such as families, the Ford Edge may not have the third row that competitors offer. However, it makes up for this with excellent rear seat room, and increased cargo space. The rear seats actually recline or fold forward (though not entirely flat) for increased cargo space. The Edge's maximum capacity is a bit lower than its key competitors'. In 2009, which would be a very modern buy for a used car shopper, the Edge received two new safety features: a blind spot mirror and SOS-Post Crash Alert System. The standard blind spot mirror adds a convex mirror aimed at the driver's blind spot. The standard SOS-Post Crash Alert System unlocks the vehicle doors and activates the horn/hazard flashers in the event of a crash.
